Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any questions about the S2 into S3 Course Choice, please let us know. We will populate this section with answers throughout the course choice period.
What choices am I making?
In S3, you study nine subjects including Maths, English and a Modern Language. You then have a free choice of six subjects from any curricular area. You are asked to put your free choices in preference order. In addition, you are asked for 2 backup options in case some subjects cannot be accommodated.
Why do I need to study a Modern Language?
The Scottish Government’s policy, Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach, is aimed at ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn a modern language from P1 until the end of the Broad General Education (BGE) in S3. This policy is known as L2. Additionally, each child is entitled to learn a second modern language from P5 onwards. This policy is known as L3.
What if I do not know what I want to do in the future?
If you are unsure about your choices, then the best advice is to keep your S2 into S3 Course Choice as broad and general as possible. For example, you should choose a subject from each of the curricular areas: Technologies, Expressive Arts, Science, Health and Wellbeing and Social Subjects.
How do you make your choices?
You should speak with your teachers, parents/carers and utilise all the subject information on the learning pathways section of this website. You can also speak with your PT Guidance (Head of House) to have a 1:1 meeting where you can be guided through your course choice. If you or your family need this support, please speak with your PT Guidance (Head of House).
