Frequently Asked Questions
If you have any questions about S4 into S5 Course Choice, please let us know. We will populate this section with answers throughout the Course Choice period.
If I drop a subject in S5 can I come back to it in S6?
Yes, you can return to subjects that you have not taken forward in S5 and return to them in S6.
How many qualifications do I need to sit in S5?
All young people will study 5 qualifications at the highest SCQF level. In addition, young people will study PSE, PE, RMPS and attend Tutor Support Group each morning.
Do I need to continue with my S4 subjects?
Yes, your best chance of attaining your 5 best qualifications in S5 is to continue with National 5s that you started in S4.
Who can I speak to if I need support with my choices?
In almost all cases, young people will continue with their S4 courses and take them forward for further study at a higher SCQF Level. N5 options in S5 are likely to be timetabled in with S4 pupils. It is important that you are well supported to make an informed decision about your course choice that maximises your attainment potential in S5. The following supports should be explored further alongside your parent/carer(s). If you have any questions, please contact your Head of House (PT Guidance) in the first instance. Completed course choice sheets should be returned to your Head of House by Thursday 18 December.
What support will I be offered?
In PSE you will be provided with further information to help you make your choices. Teachers will be talking to you in class about the learner pathways within their curricular areas. However, in almost all instances, young people will continue with their National 5 qualifications into S5 as Higher or SCQF Level 6 qualifications. An assembly will be held with your Year Head to guide you through the process.
What is the difference between Higher and National 5 qualifications on the SCQF framework?
The framework is shown below:
