University of Leicester – Upcoming Events 2018/19
University of Leicester have got some fantastic upcoming events which may be of interest to students and teachers.
Schools’ Taster Conference – Friday 29 June, 10.00-3.30pm
The annual Schools' Taster Conference is taking place on Friday 29 June and features a thought-provoking and engaging academic taster sessions across all undergraduate departments, an information fair for students to quiz the academics plus CPD sessions for teachers.
The Conference is aimed at those looking to start university in 2019 but younger students are welcome if they’re up for a challenge! Students can register individual places for the event.
Medicine Calling – Saturday 8 September, all day
Medicine Calling is a fantastic event for those that are interested in either studying medicine or psychology at university.
This conference, attended by more than 200 students last year, is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about psychiatry and the varied, exciting, rewarding and challenging career it offers, as well as a chance to attend interactive workshops, and a chance to find out about how to apply to medicine.

Brain Awareness Day - Wednesday 26 September, 10.30am - 3.30pm
Open to anyone with an interest in studying psychology and neuroscience, including biology, medicine, genetics, physiology, pharmacology and health sciences. The day includes presentations, campus tours, live demonstrations and the opportunity to meet students and experts.
SAVE THE DATE: Teacher and Adviser Conference – Mid-July 2019
This two-day spectacular, held at the University, will incorporate fantastic academic taster lectures from across a range of our world-class departments, expert advice and guidance sessions and high-quality keynote speakers from across the higher education sector. Overnight accommodation will be provided as well as travel support to the event!

Widening access place for Scottish students in UCAS Clearing 2017
To widen access to higher education, funded places are made available for learners who reside in areas of disadvantage in Scotland. The University of Edinburgh will have a small number of these places available in Scottish Clearing on Tuesday 8 August 2017; the day the SQA results are published.

Summer School - Medicine | Dentistry| Veterinary
This is an opportunity for S5 and S6 students who are applying to medical, dental and vet med schools this October to attend a residential or non-residential summer school to spend an entire week with doctors, dentists and vets perfecting their UCAS applications.
Over 80% of our students had medical school offers last year.
Medic Mentor will cover the cost of course fees for Non-residential Summer School students from low-income backgrounds if you meet our student diversity criteria. These students will need to cover the cost of books only (£25 each).

Academy of Music & Sound Scotland Open Mic Experience and Taster Day
This summer, we will be running Open Mic Sessions at Cannons' Gate restaurant and we want aspiring musicians to have the opportunity to play and perform with the first session on the 28th of June at 6pm. Places are limited, so if you're interested, please email us at email@example.com with a link or recording to your music (please note that it doesn't have to be original material).
We are also running a Taster Day which offers an opportunity for interested people to come along and find out a bit more about our courses, funding, staff and career options along with workshops in Songwriting and Style Studies. At the end the day there will also be short performances from a number of our current students and staff. Everyone who attends this event is entitled to a free audition voucher (value £15). It is also not too late to apply for our NC in Creative Industries and HNC/HND in Music courses.
The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford Interview Seminars for S6
The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford are delighted to be visiting Scotland on 31st August and 1st September 2017 to deliver a series of interview seminars for students who may be considering applying to the University of Cambridge or the University of Oxford.
The events are open to students in S6, and to their teachers and advisers. The Interview Seminars will be helpful to students considering Oxford or Cambridge as well as for those applying for subjects which will involve academic interviews (like medicine). They will be delivered by Admissions Tutors and Schools Liaison Officers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. More information can be found here. Interested? History of Art 2017 Undergraduate Open Days at the University of Oxford, Wednesday 28 June and Friday 15 September
An opportunity for students to discover more about the programme, the admissions process, meet staff and current students, and attend a guided tour of an Oxford gallery or museum. Full details will be sent out once places have been booked, but a general programme can be found here. Students can then spend the rest of the open day exploring some of Oxford’s colleges.

Make it in Fashion Taster Day, Glasgow Clyde College, Tuesday, 13 June 2017
The nationally renowned School of Fashion and Textiles at Glasgow Clyde College is hosting a special event for all Scottish secondary school pupils interested in Fashion - Design, Technology and Textiles. Pupils will be able to book onto a specialist workshop and try their hand at one of the specialisms offered by the school. The workshops will take place in either a morning session from 9am to 11.30am or an afternoon session from 12noon to 2.30pm with 12 places per workshop.

National Medic Mentor Weekend,

This event is open to students in S3, S4 and S5 who are interested in:

There are 7 different healthcare conferences at the same venue happening on the same day! It is a highly valuable opportunity for students to network with a variety of healthcare professions, learn about work experience opportunities and how to make a successful application.
Registration is £25 for the Saturday conference and there is an optional UCAS lecture available on Sunday for each specialty. Places are likely to fill up quickly so for more information and to register, click here.
Glasgow Perthshire 2017 Bursaries
The Glasgow Perthshire Charitable society founded in 1835 was originally set up to provide financial assistance to those from Perthshire who had moved to Glasgow seeking employment but had fallen on hard times. Today, the Society primarily provides bursaries to students from Perthshire attending one of Glasgow’s universities or colleges.
Enquiries about bursaries, grants, or other society related enquires can be made via the appropriate form on the “contact us” page on the website:
Successful applicants will receive a £500 bursary to help them through their university or college course.

University of Strathclyde, Engineering the Future for Girls Summer School, 19th-23rd June 2017
Engineering the Future for Girls is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers. The non residential summer school is fully-funded by BP and BAM Nuttall and all student costs, including travel, will be covered. Strathclyde will accept applications from S3 girls (entering S4 in June) with any range of subject choices at National 5.

Oxford University Medicine Insight Day, 25th February 2017
This free event is for S6 and S5 students applying to study medicine at University and takes place on Saturday 25th February from 9.30am until 1.30pm. Students will need to cover their own travel costs or access the talks live online via a web-ex link.
The day will guide students on how to build their individual story of interest and passion for their subject in preparation for the application and selection processes for entry to medicine. Students will be given examples of how to build their areas of academic interest and knowledge and how to incorporate these areas into their personal statements.

Dundee Dental Insight Programme July 2017
Apply from 6 February to 12 February 2017
Dundee Dental School are opening their doors again to potential S5 undergraduate applicants who are hoping to gain further insight and experience into the world of dentistry.
The Dundee Dental Insight team is composed of current dental students studying at the University of Dundee. They are offering a unique 3 day programme running from 20th-22nd and 28th-30th June 2017 to give S5 students the opportunity to shadow current students within the dental hospital, gain hands on experience in the phantom head room and labs, and also receive talks about the application process with current students reflecting on their experiences of applying to dental school.
There is no charge for the programme itself but please note that travel and accommodation will not be provided.

University of Aberdeen Open Day, 22 October 2016
Considering an Engineering course? The University of Aberdeen Open Day is on Saturday 22 October 2016.
The day will commence at 10am and will include scheduled School of Engineering short talks from Head of School, Admission Officer and our Undergraduates about the School, our courses, entry qualifications and university life, followed by a tour of the engineering facilities. University of Applied Sciences Velika Gorica in Zagreb, Croatia
Interested in a career as an aircraft engineer?
Brookfield Education and Training in partnership with Croatia Airlines and the University of Applied Sciences Velika Gorica in Zagreb, Croatia are offering training places to international students to earn their Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree.
The course is conducted with one of Europe’s most renowned national airlines and maintenance organisations and it allows students to get theoretical and practical experience to become a licenced engineer. The course is predicted to take three and a half years, starting October 2016 based in Zagreb, Croatia. The total basic tuition fee is €30,000 EUR for the entire course.

Christ's College Cambridge Summer School 2016
Applications are now open for an exciting new summer school taking place at Christ’s College, Cambridge from Sunday 21st- Wednesday 24th August for students who live in areas of low participation to higher education. The event, meals and accommodation are provided free of charge for attendees and there may be support for travel expenses.
The summer school will include a variety of masterclasses by Cambridge researchers; provide an opportunity to get to know Cambridge as well as admissions information and a chance to meet current Christ’s students. Applicants should be on target to receive a majority of As at GCSE.

University of St Andrews Gateway to Medicine, September 2016
Pupils who have not achieved the grades they were expecting and who meet the criteria for Gateway to Medicine, can apply to the University of St Andrews for this course instead of entering their S6 year at school.
It is designed for students who:
- Meet some or all of our Widening Participation criteria;
- Have finished their S5 year and have sat the required SQA Highers;
- Had originally intended to apply to study Medicine at university but have narrowly missed the grades required.
Successful applicants to the Gateway of Medicine will take First Year modules in Biology, Chemistry, and one other subject of their choice. They are provided with tutoring, the opportunity for relevant work experience, help in preparing for the UKCAT and admissions interviews and are also supported should they choose to apply to other universities for other courses. Entrants who pass the year at an appropriate level and meet the other requirements for progression will transfer into the BSc (Hons) Medicine degree course in 2017.

CMS Bursary Competition for Law Students
This competition is open to any S5 pupils who are considering going on to study law at university. The bursary provides £10,000 over the course of the pupil’s university law degree, plus mentoring and work experience support with CMS. The competition involves writing a short essay and it is open to all state school pupils in Scotland, who meet certain financial and academic criteria. More information can be found here. TasteMedicine - Medicine taster courses for secondary school students
Interested in a career in medicine? TasteMedicine offer two different, themed, single-day courses - 'Future Physicians' and 'Budding Surgeons' delivered by doctors and senior medical students, all of whom are passionate about teaching and experts in this field. Both courses are targeted at secondary school students of all ages to give a taster of what it’s like to study medicine. Both courses introduce basic medical concepts whilst also giving students the opportunity to try their hand at practical skills such as performing basic physical examinations with a stethoscope or suturing wounds.
The courses are held at the Imperial College campus in South Kensington, London and will take place on Saturday 30th July and Saturday 27th August for 'Future Physicians' and Sunday 31st July and Sunday 28th August for 'Budding Surgeons'. Students can choose whether to attend one course, priced at £79 or both courses for £145.

All you need to do is provide your name, either your mobile or home telephone number, and your area of interest to us, and a member of staff from the correct area will call you during their Callback Information Session slot. The slots run from 13-17 June and 18-22 July.

Useful lectures taking place at the University of Stirling for students in Scotland, who wish to pursue a career in medicine. The conferences and lectures are suitable for students from S4 onwards and we also encourage parents to attend if they wish because there is a lot of valuable information for them too such as funding and maintenance costs.

This lecture provides students and parents with a comprehensive overview of the UCAS application process. This includes, medical school and training pathways, an introduction to interviews and personal statements, alternative routes into medicine, organising work experience, CV building, funding a medical degree, clearing and UCAS Extra. This lectures cover all of the tricky 'wider reading' subjects which are not covered in the secondary curriculum including medical ethics, current affairs, landmark events and figures in medicine and surgery, research and clinical governance, significant medical organisations, transferrable skills and communicating with patients on work experience. Following last year’s hugely successful initiative, Corpus Christi College is pleased to announce that it will again be hosting a three-day residential summer school for Year 12 women at all UK schools who are interested in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering and are planning to apply to a competitive university in autumn 2016. Citigroup Economics Event, Friday 8th July 2016
This event is for state school students who are interested in economic issues and thinking of applying for Economics, Mathematics or Finance at university. This is a free event kindly hosted at the Canary Wharf offices of Citigroup. Teachers can nominate up to 10 students who are currently in Year 12 and who are planning to apply to a competitive university such as Cambridge. Further information can be found here.
