Painting Techniques Nat 5
Department of Art & Design
National 5 Unit Painting Techniques – Water Based
The National 5 freestanding unit can build on knowledge and skills from National 4 or National 5 or can be for the young person who has not done any art and design since S2. The course would also suit the young person who would like to enhance their artistic experience in S5 with a view of moving towards Higher Art and Design in S6. There are benefits for the Advanced Higher-Grade pupils who can broaden their artistic experience by learning a skill which can be used to enhance their studies.
Background Information - history and processes
This unit introduces the candidate to various painting techniques in water based media than can be applied to paper. No formal qualifications are required, although candidates would be expected to show evidence of their drawing ability.
The Course Content
The Candidate will work through two outcomes. An outcome is what you should understand and achieve related to the unit.
The unit is internally assessed and verified externally by the SQA and candidates unit’s outcomes. At the end of the unit the young person should have a folio of paintings and related sketches.
Homework for the unit is limited but candidates are sometimes asked to continue research and development work at home.
Candidates can continue their studies by moving into Higher and other freestanding units. The unit can be combined with Advanced Higher Studies. The unit is also a way in which young people with heavier academic commitments can relax and balance their timetable.
The unit may be used as a way to develop work for folio building for an art course which could lead to careers graphic design, jewellery, illustration, fashion, textile design, artist, animator, interior design, etc. It is also a way in which candidates who want to make a career in art teaching or primary teaching can gain experience of using a craft process which could be used with children.
