Music Advanced Higher
The Advanced Higher Music course aims to make pupils aware of Music from different cultures around the world.
If you choose Advanced Higher Music the three elements of Music that you will study are– Performing, Understanding & Analysing Music and Composing.
You will perform on two instruments or one instrument and voice. As you develop skills, the assessment level most suitable for you will be decided.
Activities for the internal assessment will include performing a wide range of music, self-evaluation and target setting of progress.
The Performing Music Unit is internal assessed and may be externally verified.
The external assessment is a performance on both instruments to a visiting assessor in February or March of the exam year.
Understanding and Analysing Music
Understanding Music will be delivered through a number of topic based activities: Music from Earlier Times, Blues & Jazz, Scottish Music, Popular Styles and. Music concepts are put in their social and historical context.
Activities for the internal assessment will include completing short tests, preparing PowerPoint presentations, interviews with composers, writing articles about music.
The Understanding Music Unit is internal assessed and may be externally verified.
The external assessment is an examination paper in May of the exam year
Composing covers three areas of creative music: improvising, composing and arranging.
Activities for the internal assessment will include: analysing compositions, investigating musical styles and completing composition tasks.
The Music department has, over a number of years been building high quality music technology to support creativity and music writing.
The Composing Unit is internal assessed and may be externally verified.
Much of the teaching is done through practical work.
Practical and thinking skills will continually be developed and assessed throughout the course. Knowledge and understanding will be assessed on a continuous basis.
Studying Music requires a great deal of motivation and commitment from young people. Regular practice, homework and also learning the key points after every lesson will be an ongoing feature of the course.
Music is recognised by a large number of employers as a valuable qualification for job entry because of the skills developed throughout the course so is a useful subject for young people to choose.
