Computer Games Development

Course Outline 

The NPA Computer Games Development course builds on the generic National 4/5 Computing Science course. Students will be encouraged to develop knowledge and skills in creativity, computer games design methodologies, digital media creation and design processes.  It is being delivered in conjunction with Perth College, so students will benefit from contact with FE lecturers as well as teachers in the Computing Science department.

Course Content

The course consists of three units:

Design

Students will investigate the underlying conceptsand fundamental principles involved in digital gaming planning and design for different platforms, environments and genres.  Design methods used in the production of a digital game will be evaluated and students will plan a design a digital game to a given brief.

Media Assets

Students will acquire an understanding of the different types of media asset required for developing a digital game.  Students will learn how to plan and produce media assets for use in a game development environment.

Computer Games Development

Students will gain an understanding of the processes involved in the final stages of development of a digital game.  The chosen game development environment will be used to bring together all the parts and produce a working game.  Students will gain an understanding of the evaluation process and then go on to plan and deliver a promotional activity.

Assessment

To gain the course award, students must pass all three units above.  Students will be expected to create a portfolio of their work providing evidence of their progress throughout the units.

Homework

Formal homework will be issued on a bi-weekly basis.  In addition to this, students will be expected to set aside time for the study of notes etc in preparation for tests.  Work not completed in class should be completed at home.

Entry Requirements / Progression Route

Students will have achieved a pass at National 4 level.  

On successful completion of the course, students can go on to study NC Digital Media Computing or NC in Computer Games Development, Digital Media Production and Animation at Perth College or Higher Computing Science at school.
