English National 4

Course Structure

 The course is made up of four mandatory units:

• English: Analysis and Evaluation
• English: Production and Creation
• Literacy
• Added Value Unit: English Assignment

The course provides learners with the opportunity to develop their listening and talking, reading and writing skills in order to understand and use language effectively.

English: Analysis and Evaluation 

This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop listening and reading skills. Learners develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate simple but detailed language, through the study of straightforward texts in language, literature and media contexts. 

English: Creation and Production

This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop talking and writing skills. Learners develop the skills needed to create and produce simple but detailed language in both written and oral form. 

Literacy

This unit provides learners with the opportunity to develop listening and talking, reading and writing skills in a variety of forms relevant for learning, life and work.
Learners develop their skills to read, listen to and understand straightforward texts, and to develop the ability to express simple but detailed information and ideas through talking and writing.

Added Value Unit: English Assignment

The Added Value Unit provides learners with the opportunity to apply and integrate their language skills in English. The English Assignment enables learners to plan and research a chosen, using their reading and writing skills, in order to develop their own skills and personal interests in language, literature or media. The English Assignment provides learners with the opportunity to present their findings using their writing and/or talking skills.

Course Assessment

Learners must pass all units which are assessed internally. National 4 courses are not graded.

Progression

On successful completion of National 4 the learner could progress to National 5 English or complete the National 5 Literacy Unit.
