Early Education and Childcare

Course Introduction

The course is designed to develop skills and knowledge in the area of Childcare and Early Education and has no entry requirement other than an enthusiasm for working in this area.

The course will look at careers in childcare and will involve visits from nursery nurses, play leaders, primary school teachers and support for learning assistants which will all help pupils develop a career plan. Pupils will also get the  opportunity to visit local nurseries and playgroups.

Pupils will also be involved in planning trips out of school in order to see children at play and evaluate child friendly activities.

Entry Requirements

It is expected pupils will have an interest in Childcare and a desire to progress into this career area. Pupils will be expected to work as part of a team on a regular basis and be able to display a positive and professional attitude at all times. It must be understood it is the responsibility of the pupil to keep their folio up-to-date at all times. Good attendance is compulsory to ensure pupils complete the course.

• Child Development
• Play in Early Education and Childcare
• Working in Early Education 
• Care of Children

Progression

S4 – Skills for Work Early Education and Childcare N4
S5/6 – Early Education and Childcare N5

Nursery nurse, early year’s officer, play leader, primary school teacher or midwife.
