Aims & Ethos

History is the study of peoples and places in the past.  Modern Studies develops pupils' understanding of the society in which they live.

As a department, we aim to give a broad understanding of the past and the present to develop a range of skills which will be of use whatever the chosen career or academic course. We aim to provide an experience that will stimulate the pupil and develop a life-long interest in the subjects.  As you will see, the chosen topics for study give a balanced view of both History and current society, covering a wide and interesting range of themes.

The ethos is one of focus, success and respect.  We pride ourselves in providing learning opportunities of the highest standard, and expect all pupils to work hard to achieve their best.  At every stage, pupils are encouraged to think about their learning and to set targets in order to constantly improve.  Classroom practice and all resources are regularly reviewed in order ensure the pupils experience engaging, challenging and productive lessons.

Homework provides a vital part to the success of our pupils and regular homework activities are issued by all staff.

The department celebrates success through:

    • Pupil of the Month Award for each teacher (certificate issued and name displayed in classrooms)
    • Displaying work in classes and corridors
    • Praise Postcards
    • Merit awards
    • Sharing success on our webpage and Facebook page
