S2 Computing

Course Overview

Our S2 course follows the Experiences and Outcomes outlined in A Curriculum for Excellence.

Teacher-led discussion, cooperative group work and formative assessment strategies are used to give pupils the opportunity to demonstrate and improve their knowledge, practical skills and skills for learning, life and work.

The first unit - Games Programming - is not formally assessed.  Since it's their first experience of Computing Science, pupils carry out a series of practical tasks, creating maze-type games.  Pupils undertake a practical project and a written test* at the end of the second unit - Website Development & HTML. The third unit - Understanding Technology - also features a written test while the final unit -The Green Machine - is assessed via an oral presentation.  Both written tests assesses knowledge and understanding as well as problem solving skills.

Homework is set to prepare pupils for the written assessments.  We plan to use GLOW as the main vehicle for distributing homework this session.  The occasional homework assignment will require pupils to carry out research in their own time.  See the resources section for copies of homework and revision materials.

Recording and Reporting

The written tests and practical project results form the basis for the comments in the pupil report issued to parents in February. These results are also used to inform decisions about likely progression in S4, when pupils who choose to remain in the Computing Department will study Computing Science at either National 4 or National 5 Levels.

* Pupils may have the opportunity to use Read Write and complete the tests on-line if it is deemed appropriate.
